Vortoberfest V, October 9th-11th 2009
« on: September 14, 2009, 08:19:05 AM »
Bring your friends and your choice of meat because it's time for Vortoberfest again!  3 days of diving and fun!

You can either come in Friday or Saturday, it's your choice obviously, but you will want to book your campground ahead of time!

Saturday morning, there will be a charter trip out of Panama City for any that are interested in doing some offshore diving, PM me for info.  Those that do not go on the offshore trip can dive Vortex, Morrison, or one of the surrounding springs within a 1-2 hour drive.

Saturday night, there will be a huge community cookout.  Contribute to the stack of food and eat whatever you want!  Bring sides and want chicken?  Sure, no problem!  Last year we had sausage, steak, chicken, quail, just about any meat you can think of...  There will be mucho drinking and alot of dancing an karaoke.

Sunday is a leisure day and most will be recovering from Saturday night!

Personally, I would love to go to Cypress springs Saturday morning and dive Morrison later in the day, Sunday morning dive Vortex then head home.

Diving at Vortex is $19 a day, if you dive.  Primitive camp spots are $17.50 a night for 2 adults.  Squatters are an extra $6.00 per night.  Standard rooms are $64.00 and Efficiency rooms are $96 a night with a max of 8 people.

Vortex is pretty small but usually fun, Morrison has a huge cavern that many say is open water diver safe (I've been in it about 20 times), Cypress is one of the most impressive spring dives I have been on.  It is very small but crystal clear and has a small cavern.

Please post if you think you might be available to go!

Sounds like a lot of fun but after checking my callendar I see that I already have reservations for Cruisin the Coast that weekend. However if any of you MS coast guys are planning a dive Oct 8-11, I'd sure love to join you since I'll be down there anyway. Let me know

So, are any of you guys going to be able to make it to this event?  Without someone to meet there from MS I may just skip it.

When do you plan to leave?  You want to carpool?  I would have to drive to Hattiesburg obviously to meet you.

I bought a Atomic mask With anti reflective lenses the other day. Sent it off to have the bifocals put in it. It looks a lot like the mask you have, its pretty clear. We have to stop in Mobile to pick it up on the way to Vortex.

I recall seeing someone earlier on the forum posting that they were taking a class with them.  But, you will have no trouble at all finding someone to dive with, there will be over a hundred people there Friday and Saturday to dive with.  When you walk into the campground to the left a little, all of those people are from Scubaboard and will welcome you with open arms.

The guy to the left on the campground is Jason, he will be the one with the fully outfitted camping setup.  Denise has the tan Cadillac with matching trailer.  Kraken (if he is going) will have spot #1 and should be in a camper.  Clay and Gordon have spots #9 and #10.  Carolyn is around the same area (she's the one with the inflatable shark on top of her tent).  And bunches more :)

You have no idea how bummed I am to not be able to go, but such is life I guess!  Did get my car back last night though, that's a positive atleast...

Don't forget to take some meat or sides up there with you for the huge community cookout on Saturday night.  I promise you, it will be a blast and you will get to eat some awesome venison sausage.

I've never been there I couldn't find some body to dive with. We need to save our money and plan a trip to the keys next year sometime when everybody is off work.

I am presently working on a trip to the keys in the spring, if anyone is interested.  I can get condos and then want to have a meeting via chat room one night to see what everyone is interested in.  We can either drive or fly down and rent vans to run up and down the keys to various dive sites.

Believe me there are a lot of people to do with.  It's a very small hole in the ground anyway and I doubt you will go in the cave.

Sounds fun, have any numbers in mind yet?  There's a guy in Key West that rents his boat by the day and is very cheap, I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: http://www.keysmobilediving.com/rates.htm -- $400 a day + gas, no time limit.  He will trailer the boat to Key Largo too.  He doesn't charge for night dives and actually encourages the divers to ask for a night dive.  26' glacier bay, dual hondas, holds 18 tanks and 8 spearguns.  6pack.
