Any thoughts on Concealed carry license??
« on: December 24, 2008, 09:46:07 PM »
Just wondering how everyone feels about arming yourself while out and about? With the India attacks recently, I know the request for license to carry in MS has increased. How do you guys feel. I myself recently recieved my CCL for the DPS and will carry from now on. I already carried in my car as we can legally in MS. From what I have read of the laws you can open carry in MS with the CCL.... but anyways just wondering.....

Its good insurance for when you have to get out of your car with your gun.  However, there are many restrictions as to where and where you may not carry the weapon if you are not a "full time" law enforcement officer.  The attacks in India are a fine example of a society that does not arm themselves becoming victim to their own weakness; however in south MS we are much more likely to be robbed by a crackhead than made an international target by Osammy been lyin.  Open carry is foolish because the point is for you not to become a victim.  If I come in to rob a grocery store and I see a guy in line with a gun in the wide open, I am shooting his ass first if I can.  In summary, the permit is god for those who arent police, know the regs on where you should not wear it, and hide the gun on you in an easily accesible place that fits your body type. :police:

I agree completely with you on the point about the dangers here in South MS. I actually got the CCL because of my work. I travel all over the south from Pascagoula, New Orleans (the worst) and Houston. I always carried in my car regardless. I mainly wanted the permit for that purpose. To keep from getting in trouble out of state without the CCL, have been pulled over before with no problems just was advised to get it to be on the safe side by a LA State Trooper :)

Hey Derrick, I'm just a lowly ole CO, whats the difference between reserve LEO status and full time LEO status, other than full time ment you went to shelby or pearl for your academy?  I'm just curious

There are about four status levels both official and unofficial that I could speak of.

1. Full Time LEO.  (explanation not needed) This person under House Resolution 218 needs only his current professional credentails to allow him or her to carry concealed in any of the states in our union.  Paid part time officers can be lumped into this category.

2. Reserve (unpaid volunteer) officers.  These officers are also protected by HR 218.  However if their status is in question (i.e. not current on weapons qual, current with their graduation of a certified LE academy) or outside of the grace period on which they were given to complete this academy, they could be exposing themselves and their departments to liability... nuff said.

3. Retired Officers (both medical and end of tour).  These people need only a set of retired credentials and a copy of a CURRENT weapons qual document to be covered by HR 218.  No concealed carry permit is needed for them but they can get one for FREE.

4.  Just plain old Commission Holders.  These guys (and gals) are the best friends of the chiefs and sheriffs.  They are not employed by the agency in any fashion and have never been officers or received any training.  You see this more in rural areas.  The head LEO gives them a set of creds for voting for them and deputizes them.  At face value the creds are legal but if a law enforcement agency (or prosecuting attorney) pushed the issue this person could go to jail is some states for concealed carry.  These are usually the people that incessantly call the station with reports of reckless drivers and parking violators at Wal Mart.......again nuff said.

None of these instances cover carrying weapons on airlines off duty and not in official capacity.

And I went to The Honorable Larkin Smith's academy in Long Beach during the lovely summer months of 1998. (USM Gulf Coast) ;D

You are definitely thinking on the right track.  Neighboring states laws vary on carry in the vehicle and carry on the person.  Almost all the southern states recognize each others permits.  You can research these laws by calling the NRA or looking for links to their state laws on their attorney generals' web page.  Both you and the Trooper were right, it is best to err on the side of caution.  While most officers really dont give a @#$% whether a law abiding citizen carries in his car, like in any job there are a%&holes out there and you must be in the right.  Especially with the tree hugging nuts that are on the rise in this country.

I am considering getting a gun and maybe try to get a conceal license. Would I be better off stating my handicap (one-arm) or as a business owner and (can) carry large amounts of mine/client's money?
