"Shut up or Cuff Up"

« on: November 24, 2008, 03:57:41 PM »

Hey Everyone,

Just to let everyone know, My kayak sank after being capsized in the gulf returning from a camping trip to deer island, due to the water temp. and the rough conditions on our return trip, me and nick where not able to pump the kayak out, and using a paddle float, reenter the kayak.  After about 20 min. we decided to abandon the kayak and attempt to 'tow' to me to shore.  After about ten minutes, we little progress, I hit the 911 button on my SPOT locator.  The 911 message was recieved but due to a malfuction did not spend a GPS fix.  Geos Alliance did contact my dad but were not able to find the float plan that I had left with natalie.  Nick and me were able to get the attention of a passing shrimp boat that picked me up and contacted the US Coast Guard.  They brought me to a local boat launch where Acadian Ambulance Service checked me out and I gave a statment to the US Coast Guard.  I was diagonsed with being in the begining stages of hypothermia but after a warm shower and a good hot meal the coasties left me go home but not before being able to call dad and natalie to tell them I'm OK.  There was nothing that could have been done to prevent this, I also received a phone call from the president of Geos Aliance who wanted to hear my side of the story and ensured me they would be investigating why the SPOT only sent a 911 signal but not my GPS corridantes.  After this I think I've going to invest in a nioce pair of hiking boots.

Most problems in diving originate with ourselves.

No seriously, I learned that no matter what equipment you have, no matter what training you have, no matter what knowledge you have, in any sport including SCUBA, we all are at the mercy of mother nature.  And some times no matter how hard you try to prevent something wether its capsizing, running out of air, getting bent ect.  Bad stuff happens to anyone and everyone.
