"Shut up or Cuff Up"

« on: August 07, 2008, 11:35:33 AM »

Yesterday; Ben, Daniel, and myself were at vortex springs, on our first dive we had just entered the cavern and were about to enter the first chamber when I started to notice that if was hard to breath, I instantly stopped and look at my SPG and noticed that my needle was at 2500 but every time I took a breath it would drop to 0 and go back to 2500 psi.  With a dancing needle I signaled daniel who had the lead to come here, I pointed at my needle and motioned that I was going to start up.  I started pulling on the safety line to glide out of the cave and into the cavern kicking as little as possible to conserve my air.  As I entered the caverns enterance I turned around a sat on one of the rocks to conserve my air and keep my heart rate down.  I tried my octo same problem, took a couple of breaths out of my BCD and then signaled to buddy breath with ben, We locked airs and he handed me an octo and we started for the ascent line, for a safety stop.  Half way through the safety stop, daniel and ben swaped off and I was breathing off of daniels octo so we would be burning off of one tank the whole time.   Once we hit the surface, the first words to be said were from me,"Guess I owe you an air fill!"  That was our running joke, if we ever had to buddy breath.  After the first dive, I rented a set of regs and we had a good day. We joked in the car about if we video taped it no one woould have believed us because all of us were so calm.  Thanks ben and dainel!
PS Regs got mailed off today, cressi really wants to know whats going on with that 1st stage

Every dive is optional. Every ascent is mandatory.

Glad to hear you made it out of a "hairy" situation!  Good job staying calm and kudos to your dive buddy!

What depth were you at when you discovered the problem?

Wow, thats crazy.  The first thing that popped into my head was, "The valve on the tank wasn't all the way opened", the symptoms definetly point to that.  I'm guessing that's the first thing you checked?

If Cressi wants you to send it in, I'm sure they asked the same question.

Glad everything worked out and all of you are on the surface laughing it off.  Take care out there!

thats pretty scary.  I wonder if you got some bad air somewhere, or if some insect had made a nest in your 1st stage while it was in storage?
