Hello from Newbie
« on: July 20, 2008, 12:56:15 PM »
Hello guys and gals. I'm brand new to the forum and looking for dive buddies. I'm from Mobile but work out of town a lot. I'm in Kansas City right now but will be home in a week or so. I've been here most of the summer and it's killing me. I recently bought a boat, then had to go back out of town the next day and only fished it once so when I get back I'm taking a couple weeks off and hope to dive and/or fish every day that I'm off.

I was certified a couple years ago and haven't been diving since. A buddy and I took the class together but when we got to the pool he freaked out and refused to finish the class. It didn't cross my mind until then but I don't know anyone other than myself that's certified and you have to have a dive buddy to go diving. I've signed up for several charters in Mobile and Baldwin county but every single one of them were cancelled due to weather or poor visibility and since I'm out of town so much it's been impossible to catch one that actually went out. So, after two years of doing nothing about it I finally broke down and bought a boat and I'm diving my ass off this summer no matter what.

The main reason I was certified in the first place is because I love to fish and want to learn to spearfish. So, if anyone wants to go diving/spearfishing, please drop me a line. We can take my boat or yours, it doesn't matter to me as long as I get wet. I have all my gear except for a speargun and I'm currently shopping around for one.

If you want to ride with me, I have everything needed for fishing between dives so you don't need to bring anything other than your scuba gear or, I'm more than willing to share expenses if you prefer to take your boat.... I'm 31 and prior military(experienced with gun safety) so you don't have to worry about a teenager getting someone hurt..

Thanks and I hope to see you out there.

Absolutely, and thanks for the reply... Like I said earlier, I plan to dive every day for 2 weeks. I've talked to a couple guys on the Pensacola Forum that may be able to go but obviously won't be able every day... so there's plenty of room for whenever you're available.. Do you spearfish? I would like to learn as much as I can from you more experienced divers and I'm dying to shoot some fish.

  • Every dive is optional. Every ascent is mandatory.

Welcome!!!  Glad to see some "agressive divers" in here!  May get some of us "old fogeys" off our butts and in the water....

no i don't spearfish, it's something i'm wanting to learn also!

I had a chance to "pole" spearfish while I was in the Bahamas last month, but it was a lot harder than i ever imagined! LoL. I would definitely do it again though! Hopefully next time there'll be a sharper point on the end of my pole, cuz everytime I took a shot, it seemed like the spear just bounced right off the fish  :(

Welcome to the board Stephen!

Turns out, I have a friend who just recently moved to Gulf Shores, AL.  He doesn't dive, but he said I have a free place to stay anytime I want!

This being said, we will be down in Perdido Key for the entire first week of August.  We have been planning to bring a boat with us, but with gas prices this may not be feasible.  We always just split the cost of gas for the drive and in the boat.

Is that what you were expecting when/if taking your boat out?  Also, could you give us a little info on your boat?  Length and type?

We most likely won't dive but 3 maybe 4 days (probably half days) while we are down (we have the women with us that don't dive and a 2 year old), so if your wanting to go out and will be in down, we may not even bring our boat.

Also, at this point I own two spearguns, will have 3 once I pay for and take delivery of another.

Give me a shout, 601-209-7726, I'll look forward to hearing from you!

It's a Cape Horn 21 foot Center Console w/yamaha 200 and a Cobia Tower. It's a 95' model and needs a paint job, (Probably doesn't NEED a paint job but I want it to be perfect). It's big enough for 4 divers, maybe 5 but with all the gear I'm told 5 may be a little crowded.

yes i can explain. you tried insert some sort of object instead of a pic.

is the pic on your computer or online?

if it's on your computer, you can click Additional Options below when replying to this, then attach the pic. But be sure it's not too large a file.

if it's online, click on the button right below the I, then insert URL of the pic.
