Vortex in May? Anyone?
« on: April 29, 2008, 08:53:52 AM »
I am getting the rest of my gear this week and I wanted to make my first post cert trip to Vortex.

Will a 3mm suit be enough?

Anyone interested? I can leave from Columbia or Jackson.

3mm?  If you plan to do multiple dives that won't be enough, IMO.  How big a boi are ya?  If you have some natural insulation you 'might' be ok, I doubt it though.  I was cold in my 5mm at the gate in the cave, but I don't suspect you'll be going in the cave   ;)

I think a 3mm will be fine if you "keep moving", otherwise, you will get chilled. Especially on a multiple day dives.

Frank, you're an idiot but, I still <3 ya. :P (Cave.)

What part makes me an idiot?  The cave is surrounded by Christmas lights and the floor is covered with hoses that can lead you out, IF you were able to silt it up (it's sand).

I guess the only part that was really stupid was not having my pony bottle with me and my buddies not having one either.  Although there were 3 of us so if there was an issue it could be sorted out with ease.

But honestly, you have no room to pass judgment considering you've never even seen the cave there ;)

I agree with these guys.  I used to use a 3 mil with a 7 mil farmer john, and that worked okay, but now I use a 8/7, and I am nice and toasty even on long dives.

Mike, any luck selling those regs?  I think you would do better by lowering the price a few dollars than by going to ebay.  What did Woods offer you?  I need some regs for my twin 80s, but I may want to try Scubapro or another brand this time.  I have been using DR 2500s for 9 years and it is a great reg though.

He has a friend that's interested.. he'd pass my info to his friend. I might go down a little but, not much. I'll try Ebay before I lower the prices.

So I need a thicker suit? I have enough cash for a full suit, I can do another thickness. Would a 5 or 7 be good for other spring diving?

Past that, all I have is a shorty that I got certified in.

One of my buddies and I finished up our AOW a few weekends ago.. the water temp on the surface was 64F+- and at depth it was in the mid 50F. I wore my 3mm long suit and was chilled at 30' +... he was warm and comfy all weekend in his 5mm Henderson.

He bough this exact one:

Call Phil and tell him Michael from Jackson told you to call. He'll give you a good deal.

I have never dove Vortex because they tend to get upset if you shoot their fish.  However I have several friends that have one wears a 3 mil full a seams ok.  The others did 10 dives over 2 1\2 days wearing swim trunks.  So I guess it would be how well you adjust to the cold.  I dove Pelham in September with 3 mil shorty and was just fine.

I'm going to be there this weekend with an OW class, and I'll have on my 7mm.  Last year while working a class another DM was wearing his 3 and almost froze according to him.  I loaned him my upper from a 3mm farmer John and a hood, he was fine the rest of the dives.

i dove Vortex in only a 3/2 mm, with no hood. I'm just hardcore like that  ;) I was fine even all the way to the gate.

however, i wear my gloves on all dives.

I can't do anymore dives this may, as I'm gonna be working 7 days a week for the next 5 or 6 weeks >:( i'm already stretched thin for getting this weekend off to finish my AOW. Then I'm diving the Oriskany on the 24th.
