Every dive is optional. Every ascent is mandatory.

I'm just "testing the water" here.  I am contemplating a day trip to ABW this weekend on Saturday the 21st.  Would anybody be up for a trip?  Leave early Saturday morning and return Saturday night.......

I'll let Michael know about this thread.  I can't go myself but he's really wanting to go diving sometime soon, this may be the perfect opportunity!  Since your leaving from McComb, you would have to take i55-N to JXN, then head East on I20, so this would work out perfectly for you two.

ABWA this Saturday? Sounds like a good idea.

I'm taking antibiotics right now to clear up my cough and chest congestion. If I can knock it out by Friday morning, I may follow you or ride with you (vice versa) to Pelham.

I know I am ready to test my gear out. I just realized that all of it's new again. Well, almost all of it. My BP/W has only been wet once outside of a pool. It'd be a good time to get my weighting setup correctly. Fully dressed in my 3mm Henderson Gold Core, I'm REALLY light at/near 500PSI. So I do need to add some weight.

I'll let you know my status Friday morning. PM me your number or I can PM you mine and I'll let you know.

You need to be very cautious diving with ANY chest congestion.  It can, unknowingly to you, create the perfect conditions for an AGE hit.

Could you post some info on AGE?

AGE is an arterial gas embolism, the main reason you never hold your breath.  When diving with congestion, the small sacs in the lungs can be blocked off and can cause a serious, often fatal, AGE.

That's scarey!  Only chest congestion?  Nasal doesn't count? Smiley

Here I copied this for you from SB, TSandM stated:
"With a viral respiratory infection, there are really several issues that can pertain to diving.

First is what we all know well, which is the ability to equalize ears and sinuses. The ability to clear ears is pretty easy to test on land, and if you can't equalize on land, or only with significant difficulty, it's probably not a good idea to get in the water. Sinus congestion is more difficult to assess and probably more something each individual has to learn about himself. Mild congestion may be fine, severe plugging is obviously not, but there's a lot of middle ground where you have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the risk of a block.

The second issue is lung congestion. This can involve mucous plugging of the airways, swelling of the lining of the airways, and bronchoconstriction (which is the phenomenon causing much of the problem with asthma). As spectrum said above, the big danger is air trapping and arterial gas embolism. If one is coughing up large amounts of sputum, or has a significant wheezing component to the cough, then it's definitely time to stay out of the water. Toward the end of the illness, when the cough is mild and dry, it's more likely to be safe, but one still has to recognize whether there is a bronchospastic component to the cough. Some of us have what's known as "reactive airways disease", which is an asthma-like process associated with viral illnesses. Although not true asthma, it has the same risks for a diver.

The third problem is the potential effects on the inner ear. Respiratory viruses can involve the semicircular canals, which determine your balance. Any sense of wooziness or instability on your feet could translate into vertigo in the water.

Hope that's useful information."

Don,

I read the samething (I follow TSandM around like a stalker... only a good one.) earlier today. That's why I decided that I might or might not be able to go. Smiley I'm not so congested that I can't breath or anything. Just an itch more so... I'd still be careful and like I said, if I don't feel 100% better by Friday, I won't go.

Thanks again for looking out for me.

I'm not going to make it. I feel that I'm healthy enough, just I spent 250.00 on more gear today so that killed my extra spending money. I'm definitely going to go next month though. Hopefully more nearer the first of the month.

Maybe you and others will be able to go.

Sorry man.
