Blackbeard's Report June 23 to 29 2007
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:57:46 PM »
Howdy Sports Fans....Hope all is well.  Here is the report on the trip I took last week with Blackbeard's in Freeport Bahamas aboard the sloop Morning Star.

First of all, I have read reports on other boards comparing Blackbeard's trips as camping at sea.  I don't know how they camp, but this trip was alot more comfortable than any camping trip I ever took.  There were 18 divers and 6 crew and there was ample space for everyone.  The berths were very wide and comfortable, air conditioned and the food was plentiful and delicious.  The crew, captained by Grayson Miller; Karyn Holtan, First Mate; Dennis Gautreau, Instructor and Divemaster; Scott Krugman, Engineer; Joe ?, Deck crew and Kent ?, Cook; were very professional and helpful in every way.  The boat was absolutely a wonderful diving platform and well stocked.

One Saturday, we left Freeport at approximately 4 p.m., and went to the first dive site, a wreck named the Etheridge, 62 feet deep.  After a 48 minute dive, I and my buddy surfaced to find one of the divers being administered O2 and the crew attending to him.  He had suffered what appeared to be a Type II hit, his third of his diving history.  The crew notified the Coast Guard and we headed back into port where he was transported first by ambulance to the hospital and later transferred via Learjet to Miami where he underwent 2 sessions in the chamber.  We later learned that he was back home in Kentucky doing well.  Thank Goodness for DAN insurance.  After leaving him at the port and on the way to the hospital, we motored back out and did a night dive on the Badger wreck, 46 feet deep for 50 minutes.  Both dives fun and interesting with lots of marine life.

Sunday morning after breakfast, we did a 62 minute, 49 foot dive on a coral reef named Dark Star.  Lots of lobster and beautiful fish such as gray and french angels, sand divers etc.  Excellent dive.  We then dove a site named Swiss Cheese another coral reef teeming with lobster and fish, beautiful coral and swim throughs, 52 feet 62 minutes.  Later, we dove Wounded Knee, 52 feet, 45 minutes, coral reef, lots of photos.  For the night dive, we dove the Hesperus, a wreck known for several logger head turtles.  Turtles and lionfish were on this site, and if you've never seen a lion fish, they are beautiful.  We saw 2, both around 8 to 9 inches in length.

Monday, we did a drift dive for the first dive along Cat Cay wall as a group.  I did 131 fsw and the dive time was set by the DM for 30 minutes.  Beautiful site with lots of coral.  After our SI, we did a second drift dive on Blue Chromus, 80 fsw; 37 minutes.  For the afternoon dive, we went to Bull Run where the shark feed is done.  As soon as the mooring was secured, 6 to 7 foot Caribbean reef sharks began circleing the boat.  We all went down the mooring line and were assigned positions around the sand area.  A "chum-cycle" was lowered and it was amazing.  Although the sharks frenzily fed, several large Nassau Groupers would just shove them out of the way and dine on the yummy frozen fish pieces.  After they finished, we did a few swim throughs and took lots of photos.  59 fsw for 44 minutes.  For the night dive, we did Mocassin Rocks, where I photographed a Nurse shark about 8 feet and several octopus.  21 feet for 62 minutes.

Tuesday began with a drift dive at Krispy Kreme.  A wall dive with the top at around 65 fsw and dropping off to several thousand feet on a vertical wall.  We had a nice loggerhead join the group and swim along with us as well as a good number of barracuda.  136 fsw max. depth and time of 33 minutes.  We did one more dive on Tuesday as it was port night and that was done on North Turtle Rock where we saw a beautiful Eagle Ray, large puffer, file fish and grunts.  Great dive, 30 fsw, 84 minutes.  We headed into South Bimini and wandered around town and ported there for the night.  Great time.

Wednesday we left port early in the morning and did 5 dives.    Bimini Barge, wreck dive, 92 fsw for 30 min.  Lewda 53 fsw, 49 min.; Pickets Reef, 40 fsw, 50 min., South Turtle Rock, 37 fsw for 53 min., and finally the Strip for the night dive, 42 fsw for 35 min.  Lots of lobster, crab, nurse sharks and octopus on these dives.

Thursday, I was only able to do one dive due to air travel arrangements.  Hawks Bills, 65 fsw for 49 min.  The ones that could did 2 more dives that day, for a total of 20 dives.  Weather moved in Thursday, and it was a little rough 10 hours back to port but nothing really bad.

Friday morning, we flew back to Atlanta, and then home to Memphis.

Wonderful trip and great value for the money.  So great and excellent value that my shop has booked the whole boat, Morning Star, for the week of May 24 through 30, 2008 which is Memorial day week.  I would love to have a bunch of us from MSSCUBA on that trip.  Plenty of time to save up the money and get a good price on an airplane ticket.  If interested, email me at donwray@hughes.net and I'll give you the info.

Great report!  Was visibility just about unlimited on all these dives?

If you don't mind me asking, what was your total out of pocket on this trip?  So I can prepare myself  ;D

I guess being land locked doesn't really phase you too much!  Wish I was so lucky!

I drove 3.5 hours to Pelham, AL this last Sunday, ended up driving home after being there for 3 hours.  I was unable to get my right ear to clear and am still unable to do so as of right now!  Sinuses are in full kick my ass mode right now, so my head is pounding pretty hard.  Would be a bad situation to be in when in the Bahamas!

The total out of pocket was $975 for the boat with taxes and fuel surcharge.  $150 for gratuity.  $455 airfare roundtrip, that's from Memphis, Jackson would be less I think.  $70 for hotel room in Freeport Friday night, split with my buddy so $35.

Viz on most dives was 100+.

I also have bad sinus problems and was pretty stuffy when I left.  I had started taking Sudafed 12 hour 2 days before the trip and by the time I got there, no problems at all.

Without the airfare, you can pretty much figure you get room, food and avg. 4 dives a day for around $1100, about $45 a dive including your room and board.  Not too much of a better value out there that I can find.

Of course, you newly weds would have to figure $2.29 per minute roaming charges for your cell phone calls home if you add International roaming to your phone. :)

I meant to add, Easydiver's allows you to sign up early, place a small deposit, and pay alittle a month in advance to help prevent you from such a large payment all at once.

That's still a newly wed, I've been married 33 years and she thinks we're still on our honeymoon.

33 years... that's a long time!  We'll end up killing one another by then! ;D

So what was your flight itinerary?  Where did you fly to?  Or did you go straight to Bahamas?

I left Memphis at 10 a.m. to Atlanta at 12 EST.  Boarded the plane to Freeport at 1:15 and got there at 3.  Coming home boarded the plane at 1 p.m, to Atlanta at 3, boarded at 3:55 and back at Memphis at 4 CST.

And then again, I think there are still spots on the Juliet October 6.  She leaves out of Miami and does the Bimini area also during the summer.

No, the guy was a DM for the shop in KY that booked the trip.....he had been bent twice in the past and the doc says he will probably not be able to dive anymore.

The juliet is $1440 plus gratuity and airfare to/from Miami.

So your saying he didn't do something that he wasn't supposed to and still got hit?  So getting the bends one time means you get it easier from now on?  Doesn't make sense to me?

That seems to be what the doc told him after the first hit.  He did not do anything normally associated with getting a hit.

Nice report. Things I had read in the past sort of turned me off Blackbeards. Your description really sounds like a blast. I think I will put it on the to-do list.
