Bought my first BP/W today!

Well, I sold my Oceanic Probe, then turned around and bought me a DSS (Deep Sea Supply) BP/W setup.  I ended up going with a SS backplate, LCD 30 wing, and HOG harness.  After talking to one of the DSS guys, named Tobin, I was pretty convinced that they were the right choice, price wise and quality wise.  Also, since Michael already owns one of these setups, just with a long pattern BP, I knew it wouldn't be a bad choice all around!

This should go quite nicely with my new regulator, which I will start a new thread on now!  ;D

I recently purchased the exact same setup and am very pleased with it.  Did you get the extra weight plates?  I did but I'm not 100% convinced I'm going to leave them attached.  They would be perfect if you didn't have to change tanks very often, but on a typical dive boat it makes things more difficult to switch.  I guess it's the same dilemna as integrated weights in a bc (only more permanent).  Anyway, that's the only thing I've yet to nail down--otherwise I'm very pleased with my setup.

No I decided against the plates.  After figuring up the weight requirements, I shouldn't need but 4-8 lbs.  I'm going to purchase 2 XS scuba weight pockets and put them on both sides of one of my cam bands, or on my waist strap.

Be sure to buy a harness cutter and mount it on the harness.

I would prefer if I were cutting the harness from a victim to have the enclosed kind.  You'll be under stress, trying to give rescue breaths and remove the BP/W from them.  Plus, if you were the victim, wouldn't you prefer your buddy not be using a pointed sharp instrument while trying to remove your gear that close to your body?  Not everyone who will be attempting a rescue will be familiar with your setup.  My partner during rescue wore a wing and it was a difficult thing to get him out of during the class.  Of course, he would have been upset if I cut his harness during a class scenario, but in real world would not have hesitated.

I'm guessing you still recommend the rescue cutter? :)

I also have one of these that I plan to fix to my waist belt on my right side, by my lower stomach or on my right shoulder strap..:

After thinking about it a bit more, I can understand why I would want the cut away type.  It has a razor blade that would instantly cut through most anything!  I'll see about getting something :)

Thanks for the advice Don!  A cutter actually came with my DSS BP/W :)

Ok, so I drove to ABWA this last Sunday, 3.5 hour drive one-way.

I broke out my flashy new (slightly used) HP130 tank and put my brand new regulator setup on it.  The tank had just had O2 service done on it not a month before and this was my first dive with it!  There was a leak in the valve handle area (sigh), so we had to drain out the 32% nitrox that was in it and fix the valve, $16 later my valve is fixed and I'm full of 33% nitrox.

I hit the water 10-15 minutes later and was unable to get my right ear to clear!  I tried to clear it for over 2 hours and even drank Afrin (seemed like I was drinking it as it poured out of my mouth).  I ended up calling it a day and driving home. 

However,  I did get to wear my BP/W in the water for the first time and I was effortlessly horizontal!  ;D
