seasickness at depth
« on: June 10, 2007, 02:12:35 PM »
On my very 1st open water dive(Destin Jetties) I got sick at 14 ft down. My instructor had only briefly touched on the subject in class so I sorta knew what to do.

I got sick thro the regulator, twice. Thankfully after each retch I was able to clear the regulator and was ok enough to remain down. If the regulator had clogged I wouldnt have known what to do, my instructor never talked about it. I know now.

On another scuba board they said to go for the octo, try again to clear the mainreg and if able to return to it. If unable to clear the reg, ditch the dive.

Has anyone else gotten sick?

Can't say I have..  Just remind me to never get in trouble around you!  Cause I would want your primary in an emergency :)

Never been sick underwater enough to throw up but, I agree with the other boards. If your reg clogs up, switch to your octo and try to unclog the primary. Usually a good purge will do the trick and maybe "slosh" it around.

It cleared perfecty after both times. I was able to remember to purge it before inhaling. It was scary and I know I freaked out my dive partner(he too was new to diving). I signaled to him I was ok and we went about our fin pivot and emergancy ascent skills.

I'm glad to hear that you kept your cool. Good job. Some poeople, including myself freaked out about a couple things and panicked. I'm better at it now. (A little bit.)

You are correct.  You would switch to your octo if unable to clear the primary and abort the dive.
